William Wilberforce


William Wilberforce 1759 -1833 was born in Hull a port town in Yorkshire, south east of York. He was a relatively short man measuring 5ft 3inches however he later proved to be a giant in the abolitionist movement. His name has been synonymous with the abolition of transatlantic slave trade. He proved to be one of history’s social reformers, with his persistence, compassion and a faith-driven activism.

Wilberforce was from a wealthy, well-educated family.
